Vier Pfoten
The Austrian animal welfare organization, Vier Pfoten (Four Paws) recently issued a news release about their work in Romania.
For years, Vier Pfoten has been working to reduce the number of stray dogs in Romania by offering free sterilization and vaccination services.
Recently, Vier Pfoten turned their attention to a zoo in Braila, Romania where it was discovered several big cats were living. Malnourished and living in dire conditions, the cats were transferred to the care of Vier Pfoten. Two weeks ago, the cats were successfully transferred to Lionsrock, a big cat sanctuary in South Africa.

Act I

Welcome 2008!
We started the year by diving deep into the post production process, having finished act one and starting act two of our documentary about the stray dogs in Romania.
Paul, Molly and I are excited about the film, confirmed in our opinions that it is not only going to be an important film to see, but also an exciting movie to watch.
As we make our way through the footage, connecting stories and remembering the hard times as well as the joy we experienced while working together in a foreign country, I feel compelled to yet one more time thank everybody involved.
Thank you to the team that went to Romania, thank you to the crew that shot the footage and thank you to the many supporters, all of you, that have been supporting this project for quite some time and not given up on us.
We are now on the homestretch, and as any marathon runner will tell you, keep the pace and keep on running and you will get to the finish line.
And that is exactly what we are going to do.
Thank you.

Happy Holidays!
Hello Everyone,
It's been a while since we updated the blog but now that we are nearing the end of 2007, I thought I would write a new entry.
After Molly and I finished the general lay out and structure of our documentary, we were waiting for Paul to finish a job he had started in Spain....and we were waiting and waiting...until, finally last month Paul finished the project: "Hidden Camera" a movie starring Dean Cain and soon to be released on DVD!
Now we are back in the editing room, making our way through the first act. Our hopes for finishing the entire film by the end of the year are dminishing a bit but we are working as much as we can, while still trying to take on work that actually pays our bills.
The good news is, that we shot good material and have a good story.
Thank you to all of you for your patience and continous support in this long and difficult process we call independent film making. Molly, Paul and I are looking forward to sharing the final product with you soon.
Happy Holidays!

My name is Rui (formerly known as Barney). I was one of the 13 pups that the Schnuffie crew rescued from Romania. I was adopted by Marilyn and I lived with a bunch of other animals in Fallbrook, California. Now I call Hawaii my home. Can you believe it? From the streets of Galati to the beaches in Hawaii. Romanian Hearts
 Hello Blog Readers,
As Molly and I make our way through hours and hours worth of Romanian footage, we often come across shots of the dangling hearts our busdriver had in the front window in our Rock n' Roll bus. They were red, fluffy and said I love you on them.
Back in Romania, they struck me as funny. When I got on the bus in the morning, they would be the first thing I noticed. At the end of the day they seemed to say good bye to all our team members as we disembarked. I never thought of them much except that they seemed out of place. We had an insane amount of work to do, dogs to spay & neuter and a movie to shoot. It was a gritty, fast paced world. What were those fluffy hearts doing there?
But now, as I am trying to think of an open for our movie, it is those very visual striking red hearts that keep dangling in my mind as the perfect symbol of what our trip and this movie are all about: Love!
That's what got us there and that's what the Romanian street dogs taught us.
And suddenly the red hearts don't seem so out of place anymore. Instead, rather perfectly placed. Leading our team to complete our mission and leading me to the open of our film.

Our very own Paul Carlin is currently on location in Barcelona!
Paul joined Drimtim Entertainment on the shooting of their upcoming action film Hidden Camera, which is set in Spain.
When asked about his first day of production, Paul informed us he was scouting rooftops on the streets of Barcelona in preparation for a helicopter shoot. "The idea is to emulate a high-tech satellite view of a foot chase. Later, I will be compositing the aerial footage onto actual satellite imagery and polishing it off with Hollywood production value."

Pup Reunion

During the weekend of December 2nd, the Schnuffie crew traveled to San Diego to visit a few of our Romanian pups.
First on our stop was a visit to Mia and the Bath family. A tiny, black puppy in Romania, Mia is now a medium-sized dog with endless energy. She enjoys daily walks and frequent visits to dog beach with Mackenzie, Ryan and Kevin Bath.
We also visited our boy Fred and the Keeney family. We were happy to see that Fred is no longer the skinny dog that we found homeless in Romania. Well-fed, Fred keeps the Keeney's busy with his happy spirit and vigor!
Finally, we drove to a small town outside of San Diego where we reconnected with Billy Bob and the Higbee's. Billy Bob has grown up and out, and has a fabulous life with his dog companion Ruby and several horses. A special thank you to Cathy Higbee for the delicious chicken wings and vanilla cupcakes. They really hit the spot!

Pupdate 2

Hello! Once again, a Pupdate!
Nancy Janes of Romania Animal Rescue recently checked in with us to let us know about two pups we brought back from Romania.
Blondie, now known as Emma, was a cute white pup that we found living in an abandoned warehouse. Thin and covered with ticks, Nancy selected Emma to make the journey to the U.S. We are pleased to announce that Emma now lives in Northern California with her new family. Pictured here wearing a sporty blue harness, Emma enjoys daily walks and chewing on star-shaped dog toys!
In addition to Blondie, Nancy also brought home Anna Marie. Like so many stray dogs in Romania, Anna Marie was struck by a car and suffered spinal cord damage. Our resiliant Anna Marie remains with Nancy and makes progress daily with a little help from a dog cart. Way to go Anna Marie!

Just a few of the images that Assistant Editor Extraordinaire, Melissa DiMeglio has uncovered during the logging process.
Some of our favorite clips include the team spaying/neutering street dogs, interviewing the local Mayor, scrubbing kennels at United Worldwide Cargo and capturing hidden footage at a city pound.
With only a few tapes remaining to be logged, it will not be long until Paul begins cutting.

Adriana, or Zoe as she prefers to be called, lives in Burbank with Angela, Harry and James Ross. Zoe has made a full recovery after being struck by a car in Romania. RAR

Nancy Janes of Romania Animal Rescue Inc., was one of the people involved with our project. She facilitated an interview with the major, we received funds for our bus transportation from North Shore Animal League through Nancy and she also introduced us to ROLDA.
Now, RAR is concentrating its efforts solely on spay/neuter for the dogs of Galati. They are hoping to move to other cities, such as Iasi and Brazov soon, where their help has been requested as well.
Dr. Ileana Gheorghita ( the Romanian vet who allowed us to use one of her rooms as the spay and neuter base) has agreed to work with the Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. in the future to help the estimated 12,000 homeless dogs that still roam the streets of Galati. They will spay/neuter dogs and cats as requested by the public. These services will be free as long as funds are available. RAR has recieved a grant from SPANA (Society to Protect Animals Abroad).
Nancy brought home Ana Marie, a paralized puppy who now gets around in a cart. If you'd like to adopt Ana Marie, please email Nancy: romaniadogs@sbcglobal.net

And the work continues...
Hello All,
We are back in Burbank and have started our editing process. Paul is digitizing the footage, and I am training our new puppy, Lina, who faired well in her long journey. A few people have asked how long it'll take until the film is ready and I can tell you it'll take at least 3-6 months before we will have a rough version done. But please stay tuned, I will update the Blog with new pix and new stories that will keep you entertained until Opening Day!
Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego is taking care of the nine Romanian pups until they become available for adoption. We will be there to film the event and meet the families who will adopt these little orphans. Here are a few pix of some of them, including Fred, staring out the bus window during our long journey. Billy Bob and Suzie Q snuggle up together and Fred and Kasper JR. (who turned out to be a girl) share a seat.
Silisha, one of our volunteers, returns "her" Mama dog she helped spay to the abandoned warehouse and the last two pictures are John, caretaker at HWAC and John van Zante, PR chief.

Paul reporting... I apologize for the lack of updates, but the incredibly frenetic schedule and the theft of the laptop computer made it very difficult.
Despite numerous obstacles, we managed to bring 14 dogs home with us from Romania. They're all healthy, doing well and safely situated in California. Our journey ended with a last minute dash to Helen Woodward Animal Center where we arrived seconds before a noon Live Shot with the local San Diego CBS News station.
I would like to say that Eva and Molly did an incredible job keeping this project on track. With problems arising on a continuous basis, they managed them with incredible professionalism and skill. Their leadership is what kept us all from going insane and falling apart.
The volunteers... Holly, Marilyn and Silisha were rock solid, giving 100 percent of their energy to this Endeavour. They participated in collecting and returning stray dogs, performing surgery at the Vet clinic, and helping bridge the gap with the local Romanians.
Thanks to photographer Ed Mari we have thousands of great photographs to go through, in addition to 48 hours of High Definition video tape, courtesy of camera operator Steve.
As a team, we all performed incredibly well in difficult circumstances. I am proud of our achievements and look forward to the editing process. It will take quite a while to put this documentary together, but it will be worth it as we have some amazing footage to work with.

Finding Puppies

We spent the morning at an abandon industrial factory collecting stray puppies and dogs for spay and neutering. Some of these puppies will be traveling back home with us. The rest will be returned to stay with their caring owner, who guards the property. In general, the local Romanians care deeply for the stray animals. However, there is great skepticism as to who we are and what we are doing. Once it is explained to them, they are grateful and kind.

Tomorrow is our first big day of work and we plan on collecting stray dogs and bringing them to the Vet to be spayed and neutered. Puppies chosen from this group will be the ones to go home with us. Arrival in Romania

We have arrived! This alone is remarkable as 11 people converged at the Otepeni Airport from four different flights. We had previously equipped the various teams with two-way radios, which proved to be very useful as we struggled with elevators that had unlabeled buttons and luggage hawks who want to help you carry your luggage in the hopes that you jump into their Taxi. The van we expected turned out to be a large bus. While this was surprisingly big, it was a welcome comfort as we were worried as to how all these people would get themselves and all of their luggage to Galati, a five hour drive from Bucharest. Unfortunately, the bus was too big to travel on some of the roads, so we had to circumnavigate back roads to get to Galati.

A Dog's Life
Here we are in Germany! This is Picu, who is playing with her human companion in a backyard by Frankfurt am Rhein. We will take a break with my family before we go on to Romania where dogs don't enjoy as much leisure as this little pooch here. Stay tuned for more updates. Also, check out the Burbank Leader today (a supplement to the Los Angeles Times), I believe we are in the business section, a story about Schnuffie and the documentary.

On our way
Paul and Eva onboard Flight LH 451 to Frankfurt. Sorry this is brief, but posting a blog while in-flight is still a challenge.

Bon Voyage
Hello Friends, or shall I say Buna Ziua!
Our departure day is right around the corner and the Schnuffie Team is embarking on our world journey to rescue pups from the streets in Romania and to raise awareness about the issue by making a documentary about our adventure.
This blog will be updated and you can check on our progress through the month of May.
I would like to thank our donors and supportes who made it possible for us to embark on this life changing event.
La Revedere!
-Eva
